Helping at the theatre during the season
Be part of the team that helps make Opera Holland Park a special experience. OHP needs extra volunteers at all performances during the season and you are invited to become involved and bring along your friends. Volunteers are an integral part of our team and creative processes, and have the chance to attend dress rehearsals, meet the company staff and creative teams, find out what goes on back stage.
The different roles during the season are described briefly below. You will need to be able to commit to a minimum of 3 evenings during the season but the more you can do the better!
- Programme selling involves working in a team of two from 5.00pm until the end of the interval. The Programme Sales desk is also an information point for the Friends where members of the audience can learn about us and be encouraged to join. Training will be provided for the cash handling aspect of the role. Roving Programme Sellers are also needed to sell programmes to guests in the picnic areas, bar and auditorium.
- Stage-door guardianship is an opportunity to experience the backstage atmosphere and meet some of the artists. Although it’s wise to have a good book to read during the performance, it’s one of the most popular roles! It is the guardians’ responsibility to ensure that only authorised people have access to the backstage area, starting at 5.15pm and finishing after the interval.
- Usher at main performances involves working at the main gate alongside a member of staff, checking tickets and welcoming people. The work will start at 5.00pm until the end of the evening and also involves helping with general clearing up. You need to be willing to stand for long periods and prepared to brave bad weather!
- Usher at dress rehearsals working from 6.30pm until the end of the performance, the role involves keeping an eye on the audience and helping with clearing up.
On occasion we have other opportunities to get involved, from helping with our events, education roles to becoming a Trustee. Get in touch to find out more.
